Story Two: Thomas Clarkson (1760–1846) and William Wilberforce (1759–1833)
St Johns College
This stop takes place at St Johns College and explains the life of two former students Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce.
Thomas Clarkson entered a writing competition and his research on slavery changed his life. He was shocked by his findings and wrote books and gave speeches educating people about slavery.
William Wilberforce became a member of parliament. He knew got to know Thomas Clarkson and started to campaign to abolish the slave trade. This became his life work and slavery was abolished in his lifetime.
Children will have the opportunity to see and try on a necktie of the time period, as well to design their own anti-slavery logo.
